What is your philosophy?† â€Å"So what’s the meaning of life?† â€Å"Oh. What can you do with THAT?!† Behind these responses are some interesting assumptions about who philosophers are and what they do. While some of those assumptions may be true about some philosophers at some times in history, most are false about the average person who studies and teaches philosophy in an academic program today. On the one hand, philosophers do tend to be interested in the most fundamental questions about the world and our place in it. But philosophy today is an academic discipline like many others with its own culture, norms, history, and traditions that aspiring philosophers must be engaged with. Let me give a sense for what philosophy is like today by responding to the questions above: 1. â€Å"Which philosopher do you follow?† or â€Å"Who is your favorite philosopher?† Academic philosophy is not just a glorified fan club for philosophers of yore. Many of us want to be our own philosophers and think about and come up with our own answers to philosophical problems! Next, a commitment to one’s own independent use of reason is one of the most highly valued standards of contemporary philosophy. Even if we do have a (or a few) favored philosopher(s), we do not tend to uncritically follow them. Rather, what we aspire to is critical engagement with their work, trying to understand it, provide independent argument for why one philosopher is closer to the truth than another, and so on. If anything, one usually likes a philosopher because she or he has found that philosopher most useful in assisting one’s own quest to exercise her or his own faculties of reasoning in understanding the world. 2. â€Å"Oh What is your philosophy?† While philosophers today do want to come up with their own answers to philosophical questions, or new and better arguments for traditional answers, they tend to focus on smaller, more manageable problems rather than constructing comprehensive â€Å"philosophies†. Philosophy tends toward specialization today, like most academic disciplines. There is so much good work on so many different topics out there, it has become impossible to master it all. To make progress in academic philosophy one must specialize and work piecemeal on small problems (even if they are interpretive problems concerning grand philosophers of the past). It is the rare genius that constructs comprehensive philosophical systems these days (perhaps the best, most recent example is David Lewis). That doesn’t mean that philosophers don’t still aspire to such systems in their heart of hearts. But you’ll have more luck asking the above question of someone closer to the end of their career tha n the start. This is not to say that most philosophers have not reflected on many (or most) of the fundamental philosophical questions. But there is a certain intellectual humility that often comes, and always ought to come, with sustained exposure to the many philosophical systems of the past. Such humility cautions against comprehensive theorizing prior to sustained effort trying one’s mettle out on a few particular problems. So what kind of problems do philosophers work on today? This brings me to another oft-asked question: 3. â€Å"So what’s the meaning of life?† If you ask a â€Å"big† question like this one and get a simple, straightforward answer, you are most likely dealing either with a sarcastic philosopher or an impostor. If anything, a philosopher is likely to be suspicious that the form of words above succeed in asking one clear, meaningful question for which we could easily recognize a satisfactory answer. What is meant by â€Å"life†? â€Å"Meaning†? (Can a human life, for instance, have a â€Å"meaning† in the same way that a word can have a â€Å"meaning†?). Must there be a single, unique â€Å"meaning of life† that the definite article â€Å"the† seems to imply? And once one starts down the road of clarifying the question, it becomes much longer than one might have initially suspected. Eliding details in the interest of space, further questions down this particular road will include: can there be purpose independent of the intentions of an intelligent being? How, if at all, would we recognize such purpose? What is it about an intelligent being that makes intention and purpose possible? Can the life of a Robinson Crusoe have the same significance as a life lived in society with other humans? And that’s just for starters. The same process reiterates itself with respect to each of the fundamental philosophical questions concerning â€Å"deep† topics like truth, knowledge, reality, God, free will, morality, consciousness, and so on. My own particular path has lead me from questions like, â€Å"what is the relationship of the mind to the body?† toward reflection on questions like: â€Å"what is the relationship of our everyday mental concepts, like ‘belief’ and ‘desire’, to concepts coming out of the maturing psychological sciences, like ‘top-down processing’, ‘subpersonal representations’, and ‘declarative vs. procedural memory’?†. There are two main forces of organisational power in The Shawshank Redemption. The guards are one group of organised power and the other organised power is the routine. The guards and the routine are both forces made by the prison but they use their power in completely different ways. The guards are brutal, they use force to scare the prisoners to do as they are told and completely rely on threats and intimidation to keep their position. The power that they hold may be very strong at their peak but when power relies on abuse and dishonesty is can not last forever. The routine is a very different kind of organisational power. It is present in every single shot inside the prison, from things as simple as their clothing to what time they eat, sleep and use the bathroom. It is unescapable and yet seems to be irrelevant in comparison to the obvious power of the guards. The reality is, it is not physical and mental abuse of the prisoners that wears them down, is it the constant and ever strong drone of this routine that break them. If given enough time it strips away everything individual the prisoners could previously have, even up to something as personal as a name. The guards’ power is obvious; it is shown in their uniforms, specifically angled shots to display height and status and the constant reminder of weaponry they have at their disposal, whether that be a fist, a gun or a baton. The routines power however is much more subtle and therefore can go unnoticed. It is shown effectively in the repetition of significant events (such as how Reds parole was being rejected and Red and Brookes leaving from the prison being exactly the same), Consistent and never changing features in lighting and colours with in the prison and also how time and age are shown. These two very different displays of organisational power are contrasting and yet both so effective through out the film. The direct choice of having more then one type of organisational power clearly displays exactly how powerful each organisation is and this adds greatly to our understanding and appreciation of the film. To answer whether or not I agree with how this type of power is displayed I hope it is clear to see I defiantly agree and I think they did a marvellous job of displaying and explaining organisational power through out the film. 4. Own text representing personal power My new home was the epitome of dank. The roof leaked, the walls thin and windows non-existent. It was there that I met Cooper. Cooper was my saviour. My brother. Although Hamlet is infuriated with her as well for marrying Claudius so soon after her husband's death, he still loves her and does not wish any harm to come to her. Furthermore, if Hamlet were to kill Claudius, especially at this point, the people of Denmark would no doubt suspect the truth. This would only anger Hamlet even more since he feels that he would get caught for his 'justifiable homicide' and Claudius did not get caught for his crime. All Hamlet can do is keep quiet, and that only makes him even more frustrated.   Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   However, Hamlet cannot continue to hold his strong feelings inside for very long. Like shaking a bottle of soda, the pressure builds and builds until, eventually, the bottle will explode. Hamlet begins exploding with his passive-aggressive behavior towards the king and queen. He puts on a play that almost exactly displays the crime of which Claudius is guilty right before his eyes. However, even knowing beyond any doubt now that Claudius is guilty, Hamlet still cannot bring himself to kill him. The bottle does not explode completely until the duel at the climax of the play.

Generally, research show that there is an increased parental involvement in their children’s education at early stages of about 92 percent, with women showing more commitment as compared to men (Maxwell and Johnson 2002). However, the outstanding question remains to be how parental involvement is done best to facilitate children achievement. In response to this question, Moore and Wade (2000) states that parents as prime educators of a child have a significant influence on the children’s learning in schools and beyond schooling to social, economical mindset and cognitive development. The parent involvement at school level includes assisting children during lunch times and providing necessary study materials for their children such as chats. While at home parents get involved in their children’s educational activities by teaching their children nursery rhymes or/and songs, reading together, narrating poems or stories together and assist with assignments or homework. This learning activities to a great extend do help the children attain literacy skills, discipline due to association and modeling from parents, socialization benefits and the boost in their cognitive abilities especially memory (Moore and Wade 2000). The body of research available indicates that parental involvement in their children learning activities influences their learning positively. The areas that are greatly affected positively are outstanding: overall academic performance, cognitive competence; fewer indiscipline problems due to low delinquency level and discipline maintenance by parents; problem solving-skills resulting from parental guidance in problem solving skills; and fewer cases of absenteeism due to greater school enjoyment (Gillian and Bernadette 2006). Research conducted by Sammons et al. (2001), found out that the learning activities that the parents engage in with their children at home have a positive impact on the children’s social and cognitive or intellectual development as a result of child-parent attachment (Sammons et al. 2001). Therefore, this finding implies that what parents do to their children in terms of their learning whether formal or informal is better than what they are to their children. Hence, it is inherent that parental income, educational background or parental occupation does not precede their contribution to their children intellectual development. Similarly, research on children’s literal skills in relation to their parent involvement in their education activities overwhelmingly supports positive influence (Porsche, Jordan and Snow 2000). Child-parent involvement in reading activities at home has impact on two dimensions about language aspects. First, the impact on learning activities usually includes attainment of language expressive skills, achievement in reading tasks and language comprehension (Moore and Wade 2000). Second dimension, involves cultivation and facilitation of the child’s attentiveness in reading lessons or sessions, reading interest and a positive attitude for reading (Gillian and Bernadette 2006). These two achievable dimensions through child-parent involvement create an incentive for reading skills and the necessary mechanisms that help support the incentive for reading. Parental involvement in their children academic activities is linked to the child’s benefit in terms of formal literacy learning. The leading child-parent academic activity like reading is an important determinant of child’s emergent literacy and language attainment. Moreover, the children introduced to books by their parents early ages they usually have a good head start and an overall advantage over their counterparts in primary (Porsche, Jordan and Snow 2000; Moore and Wade 2000). More empathically, the research shows the more the children and their parent are involved in literacy skills like speaking, reading, writing of language and numbers, and listening; the more long-lasting effect of retention to the child. Furthermore, parental influence is strongest in the reading subject to young pupils as compared to other subject as children demonstrate they can imitate their parent’s voices and pronunciations while reading (Moore and Wade 2000). Therefore, it should be seen that this strong reading influence is important in the sense that reading skill is basic to all subjects successful understanding and learning.
