Is Man Naturally Good or Evil? Philosophy of Man University of Santo Tomas Essay

I. Summary All men are equal by nature, are we not? We all have the same faculties, all needing the same provisions. From this equality and needs comes the survival of the fittest. One could go to any length just to attain his ends, ends such as dominion over the majority. Now, dominance can only exist if there are people you can dominate on. If one feels that his companion is a threat, there is a possibility of him subduing this companion, or maybe looking for another company he could dominate over. The existence of these competitions could be attributed to the principle that man is inherently evil. With these competitions, comes diffidence and glory. Man is constantly in pursuit of these three, whether we are aware of it or not. Man exists in the external world as a reactive creature that senses objects and is driven to act by the constant motions of the world. These constant motions lead to man’s constant and insatiable desires and wants, which in a state of nature pits everyone against another in a perpetual state of war. Here men are equal in that anyone can kill anyone else, and as such men live in a constant state of fear and anxiety. Humans live to survive. This goes way back to our very beginnings as cave people who, would hunt and do anything to live and keep on living. Now, living consists of more than just eating and not being killed. There are ones that live in the lap of luxury, and ones that live with much lower standards. As so, selfishness also has different levels depending upon lifestyle and what makes you ‘live’. So, technically, selfishness is something that we as humans are born with, but it’s perceived differently usually depending upon how the person was brought up as a child or has learned over time. However, overtime, it can be proven that everything we do will always lead back to one point: We do it for ourselves. Man is basically good since it is a fact that man is a social animal whose existence depends on the continued physical and spiritual relations between human beings, these relations must be based either on affinity, solidarity and love, or on hostility and struggle. If each individual thinks only of his well-being, or perhaps that of his small consanguinity or territorial group, he will obviously find himself in conflict with others, and will emerge as victor or vanquished; as the oppressor if he wins, as the oppressed if he loses. Natural harmony, the natural marriage of the good of each with that of all, is the invention of human laziness, which rather than struggle to achieve what it wants assumes that it will be achieved spontaneously, by natural law. In reality, however, natural Man is in a state of continuous conflict with his fellows in his quest for the best, and healthiest site, the most fertile land, and in time, to exploit the many and varied opportunities that social life creates for some or for others. For this reason human history is full of violence, wars, carnage (besides the ruthless exploitation of the labour of others) and innumerable tyrannies and slavery. If in the human essence there had only existed this punitive instinct of wanting to prevail and to profit at the expense of others, humanity would have remained in its barbaric state and the development of order as recorded in antiquity, or in our own times, would not have been possible. This order even at its nastiest, always signifies a kind of mitigating of the despotic spirit with a minimum of social solidarity, indispensable for a more civilised life. But fortuitously there exists in man another feeling which lures him closer to his neighbour, the feeling of sympathy, of love, and, thanks to it, mankind became more civilised, and from it grew our idea which aims at making society a true gathering, all working for the common good. Reaction The topic of human nature has been debated over for years, maybe even centuries. Who wouldn’t be tempted to wonder about the logic of human behaviour? Nonetheless, the bigger question is: Is the answer a sheer ‘good’ or ‘evil’? If your answer to that is a yes, then I beg to disagree. Experiences have pushed me to the conclusion that there is no such thing as good or evil. This notion is a meagre attempt to the conception of the underpinning of an organization. We are all different; we would cease to exist otherwise. People have diverse everything: perspectives, habits, feelings, senses, and methods. God made us so. Each of us has functions vital to each society we belong in. The loss of one function would create a ripple effect that would spread all over the society that could bring it to its demise. . The good and evil that you see don’t even exist in reality, at least outside of the mind that believes in them. They are only judgments passed by the individual from their own unique perspective. What one person sees as bad or evil may seem to be the only logical thing to do from some other perspective. The ideas of both good and evil are point of view specific. To sum it all up good is the name we give to people who do things that we think we like. Evil is the name we give to people who do the things that we don’t like. This is of course based solely on our particular point of view. This ‘Good and Evil’ concept DOES NOT EXIST. It is merely an illusion. What people have is what we should call ‘diverse perceptions’. I don’t think we have to the right to judge a person ‘evil’ especially if we do not know their story. After all, we are mere human beings giving our best shot at survival.

We should have integrated systems to view the work done by various departments in the organizations. Banks and markets dealing with substitutes of money or goods would have integrated systems so that any unusual behavior of the customer or trader is notified and kept under control.Need of the hour is to question the authorities if any corruption is prevailing in a particular department. Every Indian citizen should use the technology to help society build a corruption less society. The types of love which were mentioned are Eros, Ludus and Storge which are categorized as the primary styles of love. The secondary styles are Pragma, Mania and Agape. These are all composed of different categories which mostly provide the concept of love in the current society. Eros is known to be the romantic and passionate type of love. Ludus is known to be the game playing love. Storge is a love which is based on friendship. Pragma is meant to name the practical kind of love. Mania is the possessive or dependent kind of love while Agape is the unselfish kind of love. Thus, all of these kinds of love is dynamic that could interchange or develop through time (Neto, 2007). Hence, the author was able to create a study which does not focus on the concept of romantic love but also the varying kinds of love in the society. Hence, in order to understand the concept of love, the author view various culture such as the British, Portuguese and the Indians in order for to attain the accurate results of the data. In the conclusion, the author realized that the need to view love must go through a gender, cultural and psychological aspects for there are great differences in the ethnicity of varying individuals. The research question in the author’s mind is definitely leaning on the concept of love through utilizing the concept of Lee on various students from India, Britain and Portugal. Hence, this is the main basis utilized by Neto in order to derive to such study. In order to get the accurate data, the author used various students of different nationalities such as Indians, British and Portuguese that shall provide different view points of the study. The study was composed of 562 individuals who are not equally divided between male and female. The results stated that different cultures of people are important in predicting the kind of styles of love which they make. Furthermore, the cultural perspective mainly predicts what kind of love the participants wanted to experience. Moreover, the gender of the students who participated is significant in the study. Therefore, there are studies which show that Eros is important to both genders. Hence, in the study Indians is much leaning into three secondary type of love such as Pragma, Mania and Agape (Neto, 2007). Thus, the Portuguese and British participants are much active in the Ludus kind of love. In the whole study, I view that all the information provided is very interesting. The kind of love that is being practiced by different individuals from varying countries is truly affected by the culture and environment they have experienced. Furthermore, I find it very interesting that Indians tend to have a Mania style of love. Although I have learned their culture, I do not believe that Indians’ love style could lead into a very deep and possessive state. I have learned that although love is needed by everyone, the types of love could be different. Love is not only defined through an Eros relationship but also through different kinds of love such as Storge or Agape. Most people see love as a serious relationship that could end up in marriage. Taking the Wild Out Of the Wild Animal Essay Grabbing the audiences’ attention Going to the zoo seems completely normal and extremely fascinating for most families, but what happens behind the scenes is where going to the zoo doesn’t seem all that realistic. Thesis There are many reasons why it is not right for wild animals to be caged up and taken away from their homes and put into a zoo for public display. Detail 2 These animals are not catching their own food, they are being fed like pets. This interrupts their skills to hunt their meals and learn how to survive out on their own. Detail 1 Out in the wild, there are no humans to help catch any predator’s food, not to mention giving it to them on a dinner plate. Report on Snow White and the Seven Dwarves

Report on Snow White and the Seven Dwarves ABSTRACT This drama is basically about a beautiful girl called Snow White. The Queen is trying to kill her so she takes refuge in the forest in the house of seven dwarfs to hide from the wicked Queen. The Queen wanted to kill her because she is jealous for not being the fairest in the land, and Snow Whites beauty surpasses her own. The seven dwarfs start to love Snow White, who always cleans their house and cooks their meals. But one day while the dwarfs are at their diamond mine, the Queen arrives at the cottage disguised as an old humble woman and persuades Snow White to bite into a poisoned apple. The dwarfs, warned by the forest animals, rush home to chase the witch away, but they are too late to save Snow White from the poisoned apple. They place her in a glass coffin in the woods and mourn for her. The Prince, who has fallen in love with Snow White, happens by and awakens her from the wicked Queens deathlike spell with loves first kiss. A SCENE 1 The first scene of this drama presentation is when the Queen summons the magic mirror to find out who is the fairest lady in the world. The magic mirror told her that Snow White is the fairest lady of all. Once the Queen found out that she is not the fairest lady in the world, she when furious and she summons the Huntsman and orders him to bring Snow White to the forest and kill her there. The Queen wants Snow White dead, she asked the Huntsman to bring back Snow White’s heart. 1.2. B SCENE 2 The second scene of the drama is when the Huntsman brought Snow White to the forest to pick wildflowers. When the Huntsman reached the forest with Snow White, he took pity of her free. He killed a deer and took its heart to The Queen and lied to her that he had killed Snow White. Snow White wandered in the forest all night alone. Meanwhile, Snow white found a adorable house in the middle of the woods and she decide to stay there and hide herself from the Queen. 1.2. C SCENE 3 The third scene of the drama started with the seven dwarfs in the diamond mine working and when the bell rang, they march while singing back to their house. For a moment, they found out that there is someone in the house. The dwarfs were shocked because their house is sparkling clean. Dopey, one of the dwarfs when into the bedroom and saw Snow White sleeping. He was shocked and he ran down to the stairs and everyone was scared. Later, everyone went into the bedroom and Snow White woke up and starts introducing all the dwarfs. After that she tells the dwarfs her stepmother, the Queen is trying to kill her and Snow White begs the dwarfs to let her stay. 1.2. D SCENE 4 The Queen summons the magic mirror and she asked the magic mirror again who is the fairest lady in the world is. The magic mirror told The Queen that Snow White is still alive. The Queen is furious. Therefore, she turns herself into a witch knew how to make magic potions. She then made a poisonous potion and dipped a shiny red apple into it. Then she disguised herself as an old peasant woman and went to the woods with the apple to kill Snow White. 1.2. E SCENE 5 All of the dwarfs advice Snow White to stay in the house and do not talk to strangers before they leave the house to the diamond mine. After the dwarfs leave, The Queen arrives at the cottage disguised as an old peddler woman and persuades Snow White to bite into a poisoned apple. Snow White bites the poison apple and she died, the dwarfs got a strange feeling and rush home but they are too late to save Snow White from the poisoned apple. They place her in a glass coffin in the woods and mourn for her. The Prince, who has fallen in love with Snow White, happens by and awakens her from the wicked Queens deathlike spell with loves first kiss. CAST 1.3. A MAIN CHARACTER The first main character is Snow White. She is a young princess and the daughter of a great king whose wife died when the daughter was very young. Her stepmother has forced her to work as amaidin the castle. The second main character is The Queen. She is the stepmother of Snow White. After she discovers that Snow White is fairest lady, she immediately summons the huntsman to kill her in the woods. After she discovers that Snow White did not die, she disguises herself as an oldhagand uses a poisoned apple to remove Snow White from her path without killing her. Furthermore, The Prince is one of the main characters of the drama. The prince first sees Snow White singing at herwishing well. He immediately falls in love with her and her voice. He later reappears to revive her. 1.3. B SUPPORTING CHARACTERS The first supporting character is Doc. He is the leader of the seven dwarfs; he often mixes up his words. Furthermore,Grumpy is one of the supporting characters. He hates Snow Whites presence in the dwarfs home; He has the biggest nose of the dwarfs, and is frequently seen with one eye shut. Happy is the joyous dwarf and is usually portrayed laughing. Sleepy is always tired and appears laconic in most situations. Moreover, Bashful is the shyest of the dwarfs, and is often embarrassed by the presence of any attention directed at him. Sneezy is earned by his extraordinarily powerful sneezes, which are seen blowing even the heaviest of objects across a room. Dopey is the only dwarf who does not have abeard. He is clumsy and mute, with Happy explaining that he has simply never tried to speak. The Magic Mirror regularly asks by The Queen who is the fairest in the land. Lastly,The Huntsman cannot bear to kill Snow White, even when the Queen orders him to take the princesss heart. CHAPTER 2: METHODS The first thing we did is we do research online and also reading the storybooks to develop a script for our drama. We watch the movie together by using YouTube in a classroom to understand more details about the characters so we can divide the roles easily. Then we have brainstorming session with the whole group to create the script for the drama and we also sat down together to discuss about the roles, scenes, and the materials we need for the drama presentation. Furthermore, we all stay overnight in college a day before the drama presentation to prepare our props, costumes and sound effects. Lastly, we seek for help from Miss Liyana for some ideas and technical help for our drama presentation. CHAPTER 3: RECOMMMENDATION During the process of preparing for the drama presentation, there are a lot of conflicts has happened between our group members. We couldn’t make up our mind about whom getting which roles because some members don’t have the ability to present the characters well. After a week of discussion, we finally made our mind about the roles and everyone is very suitable to their roles. Our group has very creative ideas to twist the plot of the drama from an ordinary Snow White story to a comedic story. We think that we can do better if we have more time to prepare and making the drama presentation more interesting. CHAPTER 4: CONCLUSION As a conclusion, we actually can perform better if we have more time to practice each roles and planning about the drama scenes. The experience of this drama presentation is very amazing, we get to experience how an artist prepares for a drama and we enjoy the whole process even though it is very tiring. We had tried our very best and we think we deserve high marks.

The Great American Depression of the 1930's The economic depression that beset the United States and other countries in the 1930s was unique in its magnitude and its consequences. At the depth of the depression, in 1933, one American worker in every four was out of a job. In other countries unemployment ranged between 15 percent and 25 percent of the labor force. The great industrial slump continued throughout the 1930s, shaking the foundations of Western capitalism and the society based upon it. Economic Aspects President Calvin COOLIDGE had said during the long prosperity of the 1920s that "The business of America is business." Despite the seeming business prosperity of the 1920s, however, there were serious economic weak spots, a chief one being a depression in the agricultural sector. also depressed were such industries as coal mining, railroads, and textiles. Throughout the 1920s, U. S. banks had failed--an average of 600 per year--as had thousands of other business firms. By 1928 the construction boom was over. The spectacular rise in prices on the STOCK MARKET from 1924 to 1929 bore little relation to actual economic conditions. In fact, the boom in the stock market and in real estate, along with the expansion in credit (created, in part, by low-paid workers buying on credit) and high profits for a few industries, concealed basic problems. Thus the U. S. stock market crash that occurred in October 1929, with huge losses, was not the fundamental cause of the Great Depression, although the crash sparked, and certainly marked the beginning of, the most traumatic economic period of modern times. By 1930, the slump was apparent, but few people expected it to continue; previous financial PANICS and depressions had reversed in a year or two. The usual forces of economic expansion had vanished, however. Technology had eliminated more industrial jobs than it had created; the supply of goods continued to exceed demand; the world market system was basically unsound. The high tariffs of the Smoot-Hawley Act (1930) exacerbated the downturn. As business failures increased and unemployment soared--and as people with dwindling incomes nonetheless had to pay their creditors--it was apparent that the United States was in the grip of economic breakdown. Most European countries were hit even harder, because they had not yet fully recovered from the ravages of World War I.)
